How to boost your immune system in autumn and winter?
Autumn and winter are times when the immune system faces more challenges. Cooler air, less sunshine, more frequent colds, and staying in closed spaces make the body more vulnerable to infections. The good news is that immunity can be strengthened every day using a few simple principles.
Why does immunity drop in colder months?
When the temperature drops, the body uses more energy to keep warm. We also spend less time in the fresh air and sunshine, which means lower production of vitamin D, which has a huge impact on how the immune system functions. Additionally, in autumn and winter we spend more time in larger groups – at work, school, and stores – which favors the transmission of viruses.
How to boost immunity in autumn and winter?
A balanced diet full of vitamins
A healthy diet is the foundation of strong immunity. The daily menu should include:
- vegetables and fruits rich in vitamin C (bell peppers, parsley leaves, citrus fruits, fermented foods),
- whole-grain products,
- nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils,
- fermented dairy products supporting gut flora,
- sea fish as a source of vitamin D and omega-3.
The immune system "likes" meals that are regular and rich in nutrients.
Boosting immunity through sleep
Sleep affects the regeneration of the entire body. An adult should sleep a minimum of 7 hours a day. Lack of sleep weakens immunity, increases susceptibility to infections, and extends recovery time. It is worth taking care of an evening routine: winding down, avoiding screens before bed, and maintaining consistent bedtimes.
Physical activity all year round
Movement improves circulation, oxygenates the body, and supports the immune system. Intense workouts are not necessary – 30 minutes of activity a day is enough: walking, light jogging, cycling, nordic walking, or home exercises.
Natural ways to boost immunity
During the autumn-winter period, it is worth reaching for natural products that support the body, such as:
- ginger,
- honey,
- garlic,
- turmeric,
- raspberry or elderberry tea.
They will not replace treatment, but they can help the body handle infections better.
Vitamins and supplements – are they necessary?
When sun exposure is low, it is worth considering vitamin D supplementation. For adults, 1500–2000 IU daily is most commonly recommended, but the dose is best chosen after consulting a doctor or based on a 25(OH)D blood test.
Vitamin C, zinc, and probiotics can also support immunity; however, supplementation should be an addition, not a replacement for a healthy diet.
Avoid habits that weaken immunity
- getting too little sleep,
- a high amount of sugar in the diet,
- smoking cigarettes,
- excessive alcohol consumption,
- chronic stress.
It is worth reducing these factors, as they lower the body's natural protective barrier.
Summary
Immunity can be strengthened every day through a healthy diet, activity, adequate sleep, and taking care of the body's balance. Even small lifestyle changes can bring great results – especially in autumn and winter, when the body needs support the most.
